They Do Not Understand

This poem was written for a friend being bullied

They do not understand.

A gaping hole in a heart kept secret,
A story whispered so no one can hear it.
A finger pressed to the lips to hide it,
An untold tragedy hidden inside it.

They do not understand.

A single tear rolls down your cheek,
A brave face, you are not weak.
A single smile like a beam of sun,
Your work to hide it is never done.

They do not understand.

A warm hand reaches for ours,
A battle cry in hidden wars.
A single blue eye offers a wink,
A ticking clock, no time to think.

They do not understand.

Another hand gropes blind,
Another person, another mind.
Another hand to cling to, to hug and to hold,
Someone with which your story is told.

I understand.

Through a starving fire,
Through a raging storm,
I will hold you,  hug you,
and keep you warm.

I understand.

Another hand reaches out,
The two hands are better together,
I understand, and I will be there,
yesterday, now and forever.
